pursue their dream in an america that is more equal and more just, including myself. martha: bret bair, this news, although everybody knew it was likely to be coming, it sinks in in many parts of the country, and is felt so strongly in washington. he and his family made civil rights the hallmarks of what he did. how is his loss felt where you are? >> there is outpouring of response from both sides of the ideal. when you look at his 36-year career, it's banned overtime presidencies. he authored or coauthored 2500 pieces of legislation. they were big pieces of legislation. as you mentioned, the civil rights legislation, title 9, cobra. some people say that you can measure a man by what his adversaries say about him. there are a lot of republicans who ideologically were diametrically opposed to senator ted kennedy who are coming out in droves today praising his career on the senate. we learned that former president george w. bush called mrs. vicky kennedy this morning and passed on their condolences. senator ted kennedy worked with president bush on a child left behind. most people you ta

. bret, carl cameron was covering it a little bit earlier. what is latest on massachusetts politics? >> carl listed a number of people who could fill that seat, and one of them is vicki kennedy, and said to friends and family that she is not interested. but you do not know after this is over whether stepping into that role is a possibility. others -- the list is fairly long of possibilities there but the big question for massachusetts is rather whether they will change along. it was originally at the request of senator kennedy that the governor not a point in replacement and that the election happened within 145 at 160 days. that was meant to prevent mitt romney from 20 republican -- appointing a republican. weeks ago, senator kennedy's family sent a letter to the legislature there to see if they could change it back for this appointment. we will see what happens. my guess is that they make a change and have the governor appoint a replacement, and there are lots of possibilities, a long list. i do want to mention about the funeral mass, we have confirmation now from church officials

overhaul. it has never been used for health care reform. bret bair joins us now. we call it the nuclear option because, in essence, this is a civil war in the senate. clear battle lines have been drawn. the democrats on one side. the democrats on the other. that is the way it is. >> it is important to point out that republicans have used this numerous times before. for a massive package like health care reform that is more than 1/6 of the nation's economy, there are lots of people, both democrats and republicans who say they should not be used in this piece of legislation. we are still a number of steps away from that, if senate majority leader harry reid decides he wants to use reconciliation. you would have to get over a number of hurdles. it is not clear that the health- care bill can make it over those hurdles that have been set up in the legislative process. the top hurdle is the piece of legislation has to be paid for for five years and has to be a deficit neutral after that. as we have seen, that is not the case with what is on the table right now. trace: what about the political

. that's what happened to hundreds of veterans; including bret casey. he joins us now. set the scene for us here. how did this letter come to your attention? >> thanks, john. i got a phone call from my mother last wednesday afternoon. and she -- she said she needed to read a letter to me. and she and my father had already read the letter. she stated the letter is from the veterans affairs and states that you've been diagnosed with lou gehrig's disease. >> put up the text of that letter. quote, according to records of the department of veterans affairs, you have a diagnosis. it's a disease that ice invariably fatal. it robs you of your life. you become bound in a wheelchair, you can't swallow, you die a long and lingering death. what was your reaction when your parents read you that letter? >> i was horrified to say the least. i was actually driving when my mother read the letter to me. so i immediately pulled off the road and several minutes before i could pull myself back together. i asked her to read the letter to me a second time and a third. just horrified. >> did you go through
